The Isle of Skye is the largest and most famous of the Inner Hebrides.
One of Scotland's most popular destinations, Skye was once voted the fourth best island in the world by National Geographic magazine. Known for its natural beauty, it offers abundant wildlife, history, geology, stunning scenery, mountain hiking and a variety of other outdoor activities.
Lying on the west coast of mainland Scotland, Skye is clearly a highland area with its lochs, moorland and high peaks.
Despite its small size, the island is home to a whopping 12 Munros, making it a popular destination for hill walkers looking to scale the heights of the Cuillin Mountains. This mountain range is Skye's most prominent feature and its peaks are visible from all the islands. Skye offers many other geological wonders such as the impressive Kilt Rock sea cliff or the stunning landslide formation of the Quiraing.
Skye's scenic countryside is home to a rich variety of wildlife, from red deer and Scottish wildcats to pine martens and hares. The influence of the sea is never far away as there is sea fishing and a wide range of other water sports on Skye. Wildlife cruises depart from a variety of locations and visitors can spot seals, dolphins, otters, golden eagles or bald eagles.
The island's capital, Portree, has a picturesque pastel harbor lined with cottages.
